North Borneo Railway is the oldest running steam train in Sabah and Borneo. The nostalgic romance of an old steam train relives memories of a bygone era. Passing through villages and coastal towns, paddy fields, rainforests and plantations of rubber and coffee, a ride on North Borneo Railway is truly a journey of rediscovery into the heart of Borneo.The North Borneo Railway offers passengers an opportunity to experience the bygone era of British North Borneo while transporting passengers along the lifeline of Sabah.

The North Borneo Railway features a British Vulcan steam locomotive. The engine is designed for wood burning, a costly yet more environmental form of steam. Refurbished to create the nostalgic romance of the bygone era of the Colonial days of British North Borneo, the train allows all passengers to experience the beauty of countryside and the unique sights and sound of Sabah landscape on board a vintage steam engine train.As the train pulls out of the station, the development of kota Kinabalu begins to slip away. Time and history begin to take over…

North Borneo Railway Itinerary:
North Borneo Railway operates return departures on Wednesday and Saturday from Kota Kinabalu to Papar. For about 4 hours passengers experience the varied and interesting landscape of the coastal and rural regions of Sabah.

At 9:30am board the train at Tanjung Aru Station on the edge of Kota Kinabalu city and enjoy a scrumptious, included breakfast as you pull out of the station.

As the locomotive chugs down the tracks it passes through Kinarut where there’s an opportunity to disembark and visit the Tien Shi Temple or a few traditional shops.

The journey continues to Papar where you can visit the local wet market and shops, before embarking again at 12:20pm for the return journey.

A traditional Tiffin Lunch is served before the train arrives back in Kota Kinabalu around 1:40pm.

Pickup Service:
Pickup service will be provided from the hotel/hostel/lodge that you are staying. Please wait at lobby while the tour guide will find you when he/she arrive. Dropoff service will be provided after travelling, please notify us upon booking if your dropoff location is differ from pickup location.
