THE NEIGHBORHOOD

The São Jorge Castle, formerly called Castle of the Moors, overlooks the city from the highest of the seven hills of Lisbon.

This former Muslim fortification became Christian in the XIIth century during its conquest by Alfonse the Ist of Portugal.

In the XIVth century, to deal with unrelenting Castilian invasions, Ferdinand the 1st of Portugal built the singular golden wall that surrounds the palace.
