Penny’s Mill Bed & Breakfast

Penny’s Mill is an attractive converted watermill, now over 200 years old. Nunney’s mill is mentioned in Domesday – thankfully the guest accommodation is now decidedly 21st century. Nunney brook runs through the informal grounds and past the walled vegetable garden: a waterfall tumbles from the millpond sluice.

Each of our three spacious rooms at Penny’s Mill bed and breakfast provide comforts such as crisp white cotton bedlinen, down pillows and duvets (man-made alternatives available), large towels, free wireless broadband & flat screen TVs.

The Green and Blue rooms can be combined to make a family suite for four, with its own sitting-room, and sharing one shower room.


Polly's Room
Polly’s Room is our newest and most beautiful. It’s at the front of the house, on the first floor. The king-sized double bed has our trademark white cotton bed-linen and down pillows. Elegant Laura Ashley wallpaper, handmade silk curtains, velvet cushions, calm watercolours. A wardrobe and antique pine chests offer plenty of room for clothes, and there’s a Samsung flat-screen TV with Freeview and digital radio.

From the sash window your view changes with the seasons. In winter you look across pretty gardens and rooftops towards Nunney Castle and the church. In spring, the cherry tree may be covered in white blossom, and in summer you glimpse the walled vegetable garden where Rosie picks herbs and produce for the kitchen.

Polly’s Room also has its own luxurious en-suite bathroom, with digital power shower and thermostatic bath filler. A generous towel radiator holds your White Company bath sheets. The colours of travertine and maple bring visual warmth, and Cabaret mirror lights add a glamorous touch.


The Green Room
The Green Room is on the top floor of Penny’s Mill bed and breakfast, and has delightful views over Nunney Brook, our garden and the fields beyond – in spring the bank is covered with daffodils, and in summer birch, ash and hazel shade the turf.

Zip-and-link 3-foot beds mean this room can be a generous twin or a luxurious, six-foot double. The crisply modern shower room – right next door – is exclusively yours, unless you also book the adjoining Blue Room to create a four-guest suite for family or friends.

Your bed-linen and towels are fresh white cotton. Pillows and duvets are natural down, but if you prefer we keep man-made alternatives.

Paintings are by local artist Diana Williams, and Susie Gradwell from Moorlynch hand-cut the pretty stencils on the apple green walls.

The Sitting Area outside the Green Room is also yours to enjoy, with cane chairs and sofa, a desk area where you can plug in your laptop, and a Samsung flat-screen Freeview TV with DVD and VHS player – just borrow what you need from the eclectic stock on the bookshelves.


The Blue Room
The Blue Room offers views across the ancient millpond. Walls are white, furniture is modern and simple, with plenty of drawers and hanging space. There are two extra long, extra-wide, hand-made single beds with cotton duvet covers and down pillows – if you pull the blackout blinds right down you might just stay there all day…

Because the Blue Room does not have en-suite facilities we only let it combined with the Green Room. With the sitting area that links them, this creates your own top-floor suite with shared shower room, ideal for a family group or just two couples. We can make a travel cot available for this room.


Breakfast
Breakfast at Penny’s Mill is served in the conservatory, just by the paved terrace overlooking Nunney Brook. We offer anything from the traditional full English breakfast to a slice of toast – you should not go hungry. There are umpteen different teas, the coffee is fresh, real and unlimited, the loaves are home-baked.


Nunney & Nearby
Nunney is splendidly placed for a holiday or weekend touring the West Country. Nearby Frome offers enticing independent shops and more listed buildings than any other town in Somerset; the Frome Festival attracts international artists and performers. Bath is perhaps half an hour by road, as is Stonehenge, and we’re surrounded by National Trust properties such as Stourhead and Tyntsfield. We are also close to several major public schools – great for weekend visits – and the delights of Babington House and the Cowshed are but a few miles away.
